Nation Guard Pennsylvania
CIVILIAN IN PEACE SOLDIER IN WARFor more than 250 years that motto has inspired the citizens of Pennsylvania. In times of crisis, our colonial forebears were willing to lay down their plows and shoulder their rifles, to preserve their mutual safety and freedom. Over the years since then, war, civil strife and natural disaster have called forth that spirit of teamwork and sacrifice again and again. With more than 21,000 members, the Pennsylvania Army National Guard plays an important role in strengthening the nation's defense and supporting the Commonwealth in times of need. Its units have takenrt in every conflict America has faced, from the Revolutionary War through Desert Storm. Recent years have seen a growing involvement in "operations other than war," as the Pennsylvania Army National Guard has joined in providing humanitarian relief in Central America, peacekeeping support in Bosnia, and training assistance to the emerging democracy of Lithuania. The largest element of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard is the 28th Infantry Division (Mechanized). Founded in 1879, the 28th is recognized as the oldest division in the Army. Ongoing modernization of equipment and weapons systems keeps the division current with it's active-duty counterparts. Pennsylvania's other major unit, the 213th Area Support Group, carries out a number of combat support missions including transportation, finance, and personnel services.Armed Forces
