Report Suspected Abuse

Are You Worried About Someone's Safety?

Abuse reports can be on behalf of an older adult who lives in any living situation. Reports can be anonymous.

Common signs and symptoms of abuse may include:

  • Isolation

  • Weight loss

  • Bruises or broken bones

  • Increased confusion

  • Unusual withdrawals from any account

  • Signing over one’s home to another

In Pennsylvania, there are several ways to file a complaint or report abuse or neglect of an older adult, including:

  • Pennsylvania Attorney General's Senior Protection Unit

You can file a complaint by printing and sending a complaint form, or by calling the Senior Assistance Helpline at (866) 623-2137.

  • Pennsylvania State Long-term Care Ombudsman

You can contact your local Ombudsman by calling the PA Long-term Care Office at (717) 783-8975, or by email or mail.

“Pennsylvania Ombudsmen are federally mandated, legally-based, and state certified via standardized training to actively advocate and give voice to older consumers of long-term care services, whether delivered in the community or a facility-based setting.

Pennsylvania Ombudsmen champion the right of these consumers to achieve the highest quality of life and care wherever they reside.

Pennsylvania Ombudsmen may be staff, volunteers, or PEER residents; all are united through an impassioned commitment to listen, educate, investigate, mediate, and empower through a visible presence.”

  • The Elder Abuse Helpline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 1-800-490-8505 to report suspected abuse or neglect.
