  • MEDSCAPE and Journal of American Medical Association

< Back MEDSCAPE and Journal of American Medical Association FETAL ALCOHOL DISORDERS MUCH MORE COMMON THAN PRIOR ESTIMATES Click here for article. FASD IS HIGHER THAN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS Medscape is the leading online global destination for physicians and healthcare professionals worldwide, offering the latest medical news and expert perspectives; essential point-of-care drug and disease information; and relevant professional education and CME. In absolute terms, the authors diagnosed FASD in 222 children in the current study among 6054 who were screened for growth, development, or both. Yet only 2 of those participants had received a previous FASD diagnosis. For the analysis , Dr. May and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional study of first-graders in public and private elementary schools in four communities across the United States, located in the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain area, the Southeast, and the Pacific Southwest. The children were recruited across two academic years between November 15, 2010, and July 12, 2016, yielding a total of 8 independent samples. The finding that only two of 222 children had already been diagnosed with FASD indicates that a universal diagnostic approach needs to be accepted or developed," the editorialists add. "Ideally, novel and reliable biomarkers for detecting fetal alcohol effects will be identified, which could have significant implications for intervention and therapeutic services. Findings In this cross-sectional study of 13 146 first-grade children in 4 regions of the United States surveyed between 2010 and 2016, the most conservative prevalence estimate for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders ranged from 11.3 to 50.0 per 1000 children . Using a weighted approach, the estimated prevalence was 31.1 to 98.5 per 1000 children. In comparison , in 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders at 14.6 per 1000 children, or about 1.5%, the authors note. • WORKS FOR ME WEBSITE NO LONGER WITH PA COMMONWEALTH

< Back WORKS FOR ME WEBSITE NO LONGER WITH PA COMMONWEALTH The Department of Human Services is sending this announcement to inform audiences that the former “Works for Me” website, which was developed as part of a broader “Works for Me” campaign several years ago, is no longer affiliated with the PA Department of Human Services, Department of Labor & Industry, Department of Education or any other Commonwealth agencies. A third party has purchased this domain and created a website that uses terminology and information resembling the previous “Works for Me” website. The site asks for personal data in exchange for information related to employment resources. However, there is no indication of who is collecting this information and how this information is being used. Individuals should not provide their personal information on the “Contact Us” page, as it does not appear to meet the criteria for a trusted website. Additionally, we ask that you do not refer people you work with to this page. Again, this website no longer represents the former “Works for Me” campaign, nor the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, we ask that if you have any “Works for Me” posters or other materials displayed, that these be removed. We do not want to put anyone’s information at risk. We are currently working to revise and republish content that formerly existed on the old “Works for Me” website. We will keep you all appraised as the new page nears completion and is launched as a resource for you and individuals you work with. Lynn A. Kovich, M.Ed. Deputy Secretary

  • Age of Autism

< Back Age of Autism We are published to give voice to those who believe autism is an environmentally induced illness, that it is treatable, and that children can recover. For the most part, the major media in the United States aren't interested in that point of view, they won't investigate the causes and possible biomedical treatments of autism independently, and they don't listen to the most important people – the parents, many of whom have witnessed autistic regression and medical illness after vaccinations. We do all those things, and more. We believe that autism is the defining disorder of our age, man-made and therefore preventable and that it points to the truth about other problems that beset us, from ADD to asthma to Alzheimer's. We address those issues as well, along with exposing the special interests, bureaucratic inertia, and medical malfeasance that perpetuate denial and suffering. Since beginning in November 2007, we've run hundreds of posts and thousands of reader comments and received millions of hits from people who share our mission. We are here to stay. Thanks for joining us. Massive amount of information, books, etc.
